Muizz Street was created in 969AD and is Cairo’s oldest street; it is also the main pedestrian street. When the Fatimids took power in 969 they set about solidifying their rule by starting a number of construction projects including repairing canals and roads; they laid the foundations for modern Cairo including Muizz Street. Al-Muizz Al-Deen Street is named after the first Fatimid Caliph of Egypt who was responsible for laying the street as his capital’s main thoroughfare.
One of the most iconic sections of Muizz Street known as Bayn al-Qasrayn, featuring Mosque-Madrassa of Sultan Barquq on the left and Sabil of Muhammad Ali Pasha on the right.
